President Portia Shields opened the forum to the student body on April 30 of this year.
Students and faculty members filled the Humanities Building on the campus of Tennessee State University to hear words of wisdom from the university’s new President. For some, this was their first introduction.
Subsequently, President Shields presented her speech by introducing the audience to a glimpse of her childhood memories. “I remember my little sister always found trouble,” Shields said. “I had to defend her because she’d always get herself into something she couldn’t get herself out of.”
She continued explaining her opinion of the true definition of love. Shields asked the students to assess their talents and to truly begin to believe that they can do anything they put their minds to. President Shields briefly mentioned in her speech some of the hardships she endured from implementing her new plans during her presidency for the university.
President Shields opened the floor with upcoming news about Maymester and job opportunities available for the student body. She went on to explain one course will be free for students applying to be a part of the program.
The speech concluded with Shields encouraging students to live fulfilling lives. This impactful ending resulted in students surrounding President Shields in her attempt to exit the room. Students left the seminar uplifted and excited about the shift in leadership that President Shields is bringing to this wonderful university.
